Post-Surgery Eye Care Instructions
After your eye surgery at ESC, following these post-operative care instructions is essential to ensure optimal healing and reduce the risk of complications.
1. Use Your Medication as Prescribed
Begin using your prescribed eye drops, ointments, and medications (such as painkillers) at the time instructed by your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist—often starting shortly after your surgery.
2. Proper Use of Multiple Eye Drops
If you are using more than one type of eye drop:
Apply each eye drop 5 minutes apart to allow proper absorption and prevent overflow.
If an eye ointment is also prescribed, apply it last, after all drops have been instilled.
3. Continue Existing Eye Medications
If you were using eye drops in your non-operated eye, continue using them as previously directed by your doctor.
4. Wear Your Eye Shield
Protect the operated eye by wearing the provided eye shield, especially during sleep, for at least one week. This helps prevent accidental rubbing or pressure on the eye.
5. Avoid Water Exposure
Do not splash water directly into the eye for the first few days. To clean discharge or crusts, use moistened cotton wool or a clean tissue to gently wipe around the eyelids.
6. Do Not Rub or Press Your Eyes
Avoid rubbing or applying pressure to your eyes, particularly during the first week after surgery and beyond, as advised.
7. Attend Your Follow-Up Appointments
It is important to keep your scheduled appointments for post-operative reviews. These visits allow your doctor to monitor your healing progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment.
8. Contact Us If You Experience These Symptoms
If you notice any of the following, contact ESC immediately:
Severe or persistent eye pain
Excessive discharge
Decreasing or worsening vision
Increased redness or swelling
Prompt medical attention can prevent complications.
9. Special Instructions After Vitreo-Retinal Surgery
In certain procedures where intraocular gas is used:
Head positioning may be required for healing.
Flying is prohibited for a period of time after surgery, as air travel can cause dangerous pressure changes.
Your surgeon will give you specific instructions tailored to your surgery.
