Pterygium

Clear eyes, clear vision. Remove irritation the safe and effective way.

A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of tissue on the white part of the eye that can extend onto the cornea. Commonly known as “surfer’s eye,” it is often caused by prolonged exposure to UV light, dust, wind, or dry environments.

Though it may start as a minor irritation, a growing pterygium can cause redness, discomfort, blurred vision, and even corneal distortion if left untreated.

Symptoms

  • Excessive UV exposure (sunlight)

  • Chronic eye irritation from wind, dust, smoke, or dry air

  • Outdoor occupations or activities

  • Genetic predisposition

Causes

  • Visible pinkish growth on the white of the eye

  • Redness and eye irritation

  • Dryness or burning sensation

  • Foreign body sensation (feeling like something is in the eye)

  • Blurred or distorted vision (if the pterygium extends over the cornea)

  • Cosmetic concern

Our Treatment Approach

Depending on size and symptoms, treatment may include:

  • Lubricating Eye Drops
    To relieve dryness and irritation.

  • Anti-inflammatory Medications
    To reduce redness and swelling.

  • Pterygium Surgery
    Recommended if the pterygium:

    • Continues to grow

    • Causes visual disturbances

    • Results in cosmetic concerns

Our surgical technique includes conjunctival autograft, which significantly reduces the risk of recurrence.
